The most common surgeries for which you can expect physiotherapy treatment include:
- Orthopaedic Surgery: bone, joint and muscle repairs, reconstructions and replacements
- Spinal and Neurological Surgery: spinal fusions, disc repairs and replacements, brain surgery and other procedures
- Abdominal and Thoracic Surgery: surgery for the internal organs including the lungs, heart, liver, gastrointestinal system and other organs
- Obstetric and Gynaecological Surgery: postnatal, hysterectomy, gynaecological repairs and reconstructions and other procedures
- Urological Surgery: bladder and prostate surgery
- Breast Surgery: resections and reconstructions
In Hospital Physiotherapy
In many cases, inpatient post-operative rehabilitation will start right at your bedside, the day after your surgery. The treatment provided will depend on the specific type of surgery, your doctor’s instructions and your level of recovery.
Common post-operative treatment may include:
- Breathing and Circulation Exercises: to prevent respiratory and vascular complications
- Movement assistance: to move safely after surgery
- Mobility Aids: advice and instruction on how to safely use crutches or other walking aids as required
- Discharge Advice: information regarding any necessary equipment that you may require at home after discharge
- Splints / Orthoses: fitting of splints or slings and instructions on how to apply and reapply these at home
- Ongoing Rehabilitation Advice: explanation of the expected rehabilitation process and any precautions
- Tailored Exercise: specific exercises and instruction, to assist your recovery
Outpatient Physiotherapy
Following your discharge from hospital, Anchala’s Physiotherapists can continue to support your rehabilitation. You do not require a Doctor’s referral to see a Physiotherapist, but any information regarding your surgery will be helpful. Once your Physiotherapist has developed a tailored treatment plan, they will use a combination of hands-on mobilisation and massage, guided exercise and other techniques, to help you improve your range of motion, coordination and strength, so that you can return to your work, sport and hobbies.
